Your car's a/c system is a complicated system consisting of several components, including a compressor, refrigerant, evaporator, condenser, receiver-dryer and expansion valve/orifice.
How does it work?
Invented for cars in 1939, Packard was the first to offer factory-installed a/c for its 1940 models. Simply put air conditioning cools and removes humidity. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant and sends it to the condensing coils. The condenser is like a radiator and its function is to push hot air out of the car. The evaporator also takes humidity out of the air in the car, which helps you feel cool.
What is a/c recharging?
This means adding fresh refrigerant to the air conditioning system. If the refrigerant is a bit low, it can be topped off, just like your engine oil. If it's really low, though, whatever refrigerant remains in the system needs to be drained and replaced.
